May 1997

Late April-early May: Spattering at the episode 55 vent has built a new cone at the base of Pu`u `O`o. Voluminous lava flows have been issuing from this vent and another that formed on the southern side of Pu`u `O`o following a rapid localized uplift. The lava lake has not been very active. A few images and video clips shown below.


May 10-11 - Several pauses in the eruption over the weekend. Low fountaining still happening from the small cones at the base of Puu Oo. A scare as a large aa flow is headed toward upper Royal Gardens subdivision, but it soon dies off during another eruptive pause.
