Needless to say, we trash a lot of camera equipment working on volcanoes. The intense heat and acidic fumes really take their toll - we've even melted a few cameras. So we are always in the market to find the best performing gear that we can afford to replace.
We are using a SONY EX-1 XDCAM camera with 1/2" CMOS Chips and editing on Final Cut Pro. We have been shooting in high definition for the past 3 years and have an excellent library of high definition shots, including some underwater footage.
